In the northern loop was electrified but following the opening of the Northern Line extension to Morden the southern loop had lost much of its traffic to the underground with commuters using Colliers Wood rather than Merton Abbey which closed from 3rd March when the loop was relegated to freight traffic only From the following day, electric trains ran half-hourly between Wimbledon and Holborn Viaduct seven days a week and the new electric trains quickly won back passengers from road transport.
In the late s and s, Merton saw industrial expansion and a siding was laid from the Merton Abbey track into the new Lines Brothers Triang toy factory in Morden Road.
As late as there were still two return goods workings daily from Norwood to Merton Abbey and one on Saturdays to Hackbridge, but with factory closures and increased use of road transport, loadings fell, and after the last revenue train ran coal down to Merton Abbey on 1 May the track was quickly lifted. The road was built to relieve traffic congestion on Merton High Street and was originally planned to continue to the west, along the route of the old railway to Kingston Road, with a flyover across Morden Road.
This section of the route was never constructed although the space between the carriageways where Merantun Road meets Morden Road provides the space for a flyover bridge to be constructed. The track bed between Morden Road and Merton Park Station is now a public footpath and nature reserve. The tickets above are not from the original Tooting Junction station but from the later replacement.
The Bradshaw also refers to the later station. See also the St. Tooting Junction Station looking east in c. The replacement station can be seen on the far side of the bridge. The main station building seen on the left remained unaltered for more than 90 years after this picture was taken. Although published in the survey was probably made in when the station was still open.
The station building is seen at the east end of the up main line platform with an open shelter in the form of a canopy on the island platform. A coal depot is seen on the down side of the Merton Park line. An access road to the goods yards runs from Mitcham Road to Finborough Road.
There is a small goods shed behind the down platform backing on to this road. Click here for a larger version. The station is now closed. The goods yard has been relaid with an new rail served warehouse to the west of the coal yard.
The goods yard can now only be accessed from Mitcham Road. There has been some residential development between the two lines.
