Which swear words are in the bible
I was raised in a home that loved God but often missed the mark and the abuse of language was frequent. I studied in a bible college, served in many ministries and have traveled over seas on a number of missionary trips.
I loved every moment of everything I am sharing with you. In recent years I have fallen into the habit of swearing, something I promised I would not do from a very young age, as I hated hearing it used by my parents as a child. Six years ago I stopped working for and attending a church I had ties to since I was 5 yrs old and I grieved. Swearing is partly about word usage and mostly about the words impact on people.
Everything in this life is about relationship — first with our Lord then with everyone else. Is swearing a sin? If something is capable of driving a wedge between loving relationships it is a sin focusing on what words are or are not swear words is a distraction.
I am hungry and need help to rebuild my relationship with my Father after these many years. So I genuinely appreciate everything shared above — none of you know me, yet you are my brothers and sisters in Christ and you have ministered to me. Pray I can swallow my pride and let God back in. I guess this was kind of my first step in humbling myself. Hello Eugene. I would talk to your pastor too for other strategies.
I recommend you stay in the Word of God more, the Bible and that helps to renew your minds Rom and it allows the Holy Spirit to do His work in you.
To rebuild your relationship you might try fasting and prayer if you have no medical conditions that a fast might cause so talk to your doctor first. Now I know not to use that term. The best way to avoid using swearing or cussing words is probably using the formal language… but thanks for letting me know;this site and your articles are conducive! I find it real helpful! Why are so many Christians fake?
How do you express yourself when something happens in life? God gave us common sense to discern things; we should use it and not be fake. I wish my classmates would also see this…. I really seek guidance from the Lord.
Thank you Justin. This shows me that God is working in your life young man. May God richly bless you for that. Good question. Thank you Jenny.
Thank you so much. May God richly bless you my friend in Christ. Its great to see their humility and tenderness toward the things of God! If a Christian is habitually using vulgarity in his arguments, or even among friends in casual conversation, he is still a babe and needs to grow in his relationship with his Savior and Lord.
A good way to filter what words you choose is to live in the reality of the presence of Jesus. I think not. God works through humble people.
Thank you Rose. Very good comments. Things I have never knew before. Before that there was never a subset of words that were considered off limits or rude. All the instruction we have is very clear. Our speech should be to build up people and expletives can be very effective in doing that.
Whatever things are lovely, pure, noble, and such things as these we should set our minds on. If you would not be ashamed to say it in front of your children, grandchildren, or Jesus, then you should not say it to anyone. Building up others does not involve expletives. My favorite part of this is that you provide no justification for your conclusions. You cite a scripture but make no connection between them. Is he benefitting? And if someone decides something is a curse word, it just… is?
So how does that work? So who decides? What constitutes cursing? What is the standard of wholesomeness? Hello Mr. Your comment about swearing was edited because it contained profanity and filthy language so would you say these swear words in front of Jesus? I am not pushing anything but what the Bible says and some cannot accept the truth such as you so please repent of this and I pray you are not around children with the language you use.
Of no help at all!!! White, black, yellow, whatever skin color has nothing to do with obeying the Word of God and the Bible teaches let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but your help will not come from this article Mr.
It is only thru Christ Phil , and I am sorry you have prejudice against white people. Please repent of this. Please repent for there is neither Greek, Jew, male or female, and I would add, no black or white, but only the children of God. Thank you! Your point is well taken.
I do agree. Thank you kindly. This article was great and filled with scripture but should be backed up with practical holy spirit inspired suggestions on real actions one can take on taming the tongue. Hello Torres. I am sorry we dissapointed you so much. I see you did not like it, over all, but thank you for your comment nonetheless. Hello PT. The person who has the Holy spirit who are baptized with the fire of the Holy Spirit does not naturally utter such words.
Therefore it is not easy for the so called theological Christians they call us understand that super freedom of all your flesh wanna say attitude of some proclaimed believers. Notify me of followup comments via e-mail.

Arguing against the use of foul language is an acknowledgment of the power of language. Does Jesus care if we cuss or swear or use profanity? Those people who say He doesn't display woeful ignorance of Scripture and a callous disregard for what believers through the centuries have experienced as well as an insensitivity to the voice of a sanctified conscience. Devotional thought on the ending verses of Luke 4 and the beginning section of Luke 5: Jesus and the power of His words. He heard about a dude ranch for sale in the mountains southwest of Colorado Springs.
When he visited Bear Trap Ranch, Gene could hardly contain his excitement. That property was exactly what he was looking for. He went back to Colorado Springs to see George Krause, the gruff president of the company that owned the mountain ranch in addition to the historic Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs.
We want to tell college students about Jesus, and Jesus has this thing about hell. O Lord , you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure. For you have made the city a heap, the fortified city a ruin; the foreigners' palace is a city no more; it will never be rebuilt. Therefore strong peoples will glorify you; cities of ruthless nations will fear you.
For you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat; for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall, like heat in a dry place. You subdue the noise of the foreigners; as heat by the shade of a cloud, so the song of the ruthless is put down. Of David, for the memorial offering. Make haste, O God, to deliver me!
O Lord , make haste to help me! Let them be put to shame and confusion who seek my life! Let them be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt! You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord , do not delay! To the choirmaster: according to Do Not Destroy. A Miktam of David. Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods? Do you judge the children of man uprightly?
No, in your hearts you devise wrongs; your hands deal out violence on earth. The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray from birth, speaking lies. They have venom like the venom of a serpent, like the deaf adder that stops its ear, so that it does not hear the voice of charmers or of the cunning enchanter. And the elders of the city that is nearest to the slain man shall take a heifer that has never been worked and that has not pulled in a yoke.
And the elders of that city shall bring the heifer down to a valley with running water, which is neither plowed nor sown, and shall break the heifer's neck there in the valley. Then the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come forward, for the Lord your God has chosen them to minister to him and to bless in the name of the Lord , and by their word every dispute and every assault shall be settled.
To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. Of David. Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy.
Let me dwell in your tent forever! Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings! Selah For you, O God, have heard my vows; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth.
It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart.
Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of face the heart is made glad. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools. Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.
A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion. When wickedness comes, contempt comes also, and with dishonor comes disgrace. The words of a man's mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.
It is not good to be partial to the wicked or to deprive the righteous of justice. O Lord , I call upon you; hasten to me! Give ear to my voice when I call to you! Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!
Set a guard, O Lord , over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips! Do not let my heart incline to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds in company with men who work iniquity, and let me not eat of their delicacies! Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head; let my head not refuse it. Yet my prayer is continually against their evil deeds. A Song of Ascents. In my distress I called to the Lord , and he answered me. Deliver me, O Lord , from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue.
What shall be given to you, and what more shall be done to you, you deceitful tongue? A warrior's sharp arrows, with glowing coals of the broom tree!
Woe to me, that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar! Then shall I have an answer for him who taunts me, for I trust in your word.
And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in your rules. I will keep your law continually, forever and ever, and I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts.
I will also speak of your testimonies before kings and shall not be put to shame, O Lord , God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth! Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve! O Lord , how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult? They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. They crush your people, O Lord , and afflict your heritage.
To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? I remember in youth group once I got in trouble for even spelling a curse word out.
In essence, curse words are offensive because they are commonly used as though they are offensive. This is from the part of the Bible where Prince Jonathan covered for David while David snuck off home, and the mad king Saul was ticked because Saul was planning on killing David.
Shortly after this exchange, Saul throws a spear and tries to kill his own son. Look at this passage, though. Modern English has a very similar colloquialism with an equivalent meaning. Now, what am I saying here?
And he [Jesus] said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected. Now it gets tricky.
